In 1972, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) publicize the names of 6,127 islands in Indonesia. In 1987, Center for Surveys and Mapping Armed Forces (military Pussurta) states that the number of islands in Indonesia is 17,508, where 5,707 of them have a name. Coordination Agency for Surveys and Mapping Agency (Bakosurtanal), in 1992 issued a Gazetteer Name Island and Islands of Indonesia, which recorded as many as 6,489 islands called, including the name of 374 islands in the river. Institutions National Aeronautics and Space (Lapan), in 2002, based on the results of the study satellite imagery indicate that the number of islands in Indonesia is 18,306 units.

Data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2004 stated that 7,870 islands are named, while the 9,634 islands not named. Among the many islands in Indonesia, which is only about 6,000 populated islands.
